Reclaiming My Spirit

Ballin’ on a Budget

If you read my About Me Page, you know I’m a believer in retail therapy. In a lot of ways, I was destined to be a shopper. Some of my earliest and fondest memories are of my older brother and me out shopping with our mom at one of the many malls in Cleveland, Ohio as I was growing up.

In college, I was introduced to garage sales. A neighbor of mine took me out with her one Saturday. When I saw how much nice stuff you could get on the cheap, I was hooked! Being a young, broke college student, I was initially hooked primarily out of necessity. However, even as my financial status changed, my love of second hand shopping didn’t.

Now, going to garage sales, flea markets, thrift and antique stores is one of Michael and my favorite hobbies.  I know some people think “Ewwww” when they think about second hand items. Not me! I know what a disposable society we’ve become.  As Americans, we have so many nice things we acquire and discard before we’ve even open the package or take the tags off. You might be surprised at how many cute, unique or vintage things you can find.

In Ballin’ on a Budget, I’ll share my second hand finds and when possible, show you how I used and or incorporated the item(s) into the more expensive items in my home, clothes or travel.

Here’s an example of some of my recent acquisitions.

I found these cute water shoes at a Goodwill in SW Florida on the way back from our recent Ft. Lauderdale trip. They were brand new and $7.99.

Since I joined the Southwest Florida Goodwill club, I got 25% off my purchases. That made the shoes $5.99. As you can see, similar shoes on Amazon would be twice the price.

Coincidentally, I found this boogie board in the same store. Anyone who knows me, knows I LOVE (in my Pops voice) to COOOOOORDINATE. How could I pass up a matching flamingo boogie board?

Now look at the price of the Flamingo boogie board I bought and subtract 25%  for my discount. That made the price of the boogie board, $11.25. That’s an 88% savings off the lowest Amazon price for a similar boogie board! Since the board was used (but in good condition), let’s cut the price in half to $26.49. That’s still a 58% savings from the price on Amazon. And they match my shoes!

So here I am, coordinated and ready to break in the new boogie board. I had a blast!

The money I saved helped offset the cost of our stay at the beachy keen Clearwater Hilton. You can check for my review of that beachside oasis soon.

Ballin’ on a budget by second hand shopping is one of the ways I keep my spirits high. I love the thrill of the hunt, the thrill of a bargain and the thrill of pulling it all together!

How about you? If you love a bargain, share your best second hand shopping tips in the comments below.
